Heroes in Our Midst - June 6, 2015

The Pike-Amite-Walthall Library System is celebrating HEROES this summer!

On Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., 
the McComb Public Library will host "Heroes in Our Midst." Several military veterans will be here to talk about their experiences. Light refreshments will be served.

Pike County Field Day Contests Attract Large Crowd

Magnolia, Miss., March 29 ---
The annual field day exercises of the Pike county schools were held here Saturday, and attracted a large crowd. All contestants and visitors were entertained at dinner on the high school grounds by the ladies of Magnolia. The repast was served in picnic style. The musical and literary contests were held in the auditorium of the Magnolia High School and resulted as follows:

High school contests: Declamation, Charles Garland, McComb school;
expression, James Huff, Magnolia;
music, Mary Goza, Magnolia;
advanced spelling, Stella Kausler, McComb.

Grammar school contests: Declamation, Frank Goza, Magnolia;
expression, Dorris Lenoir, McComb;
music, Julia Lane, McComb;
spelling, Lillian Venable, McComb.

The athletic contests took place at the Pike County Fair Grounds and resulted as follows:

Senior athletics:
Standing broad jump: Herbert Cain, McComb, first; Enoch Gerald, McComb, second.
100-yard dash: Lucius Pigott, McComb, first; Gus Nelson, McComb, second.
1 mile run: Charles Lewman, McComb, no contest
Running broad jump: Enoch Gerald, McComb, first; Maxey Magee, second.
220-yard dash: Lucius Pigott, McComb, first; L. Brumfield, Silver Creek, second.

Standing high jump: Herbert Cain, McComb, first; John Burkholter and L. Brumfield tied for second place.
Half mile run: Russell Lewman, McComb, first; R. Dale, South McComb, second.
Running high jump: Herbert Cain, McComb, first; Kenna and McDaniel tied for second place.
Pole vault: Ardis Rushing, McComb, first; L. Simmons, Silver Creek, second.
Mile relay race: McComb, first: H. Larson, H. Cain, C. Lewman, and G. Nelson;
McComb second: L. Pigott, C. Gerald, J. Hart, and R. Lewman

Junior athletics:
