"The deeds in this book were recorded in books from about 1785 to 1827. The money changed hands from 1752 to 1827. Only a few transactions between 1752 and about 1774 are recorded. During this period, the state line was indeterminate...some transactions may have been recorded in North Carolina, "As would be expected, most of the land described is in present day Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. Some land is in Union Co. which was, for a time, part of Spartanburg Dist. Also, there is land on the boundary between Spartanburg and Union or Greenville Counties. However, for some reason, there are also a few deeds for land in North Carolina (primarily Rutherford County), Tennessee and Georgia"--Foreword, 2nd prelim. page.
